Whether it’s a dry winter or a hot summer, our dogs often suffer from sensitive and crusty noses when the weather gets too extreme. Perhaps they have a cold and their nose has gone dry and flaky, or their skin is dry and itchy from Spring allergies. Even their paws can crack from extreme and everyday weather conditions! What’s a dog owner to do to keep their pup happy and comfortable when snow or sun hits hard?
Sweet Almond Oil
There’s been a lot of talk about how different types of oils can help rejuvenate and revitalize humans, but they can do just that for our furry friends too! One of these oils is sweet almond oil, which is a “fixed oil”. This means it is a true oil and will not evaporate. It is rich in protein, vitamins and minerals that leave your dog feeling relaxed and ready for their next walk while moisturizing their skin and soothing whatever ails them. Sweet almond oil is easily and quickly absorbed making it a great topical lotion.
Why It’s Great
Dogs can’t produce the same level of fatty acids as humans can, so they need to consume the remainder of these acids through their diet in order to keep them healthy. Unfortunately, not many dog food brands make their food with the recommended about of fatty acids for our pups. This leads them to be liable to dry and itchy skin, and dry noses. Putting some sweet almond oil on their nose or massaging some into their skin is a great way to moisturize and soothe their dry skin and noses! The best part about using sweet almond oil though - it’s all natural, no harsh chemicals needed.
What It Can Do
Sweet almond oil has a lot of great benefits for dog wellness. You can apply it to their nose when it’s getting dry and flaky to help relieve the pain and moisturize the skin around their snout. It’s a good idea to give them something to chew on while you apply it to let it sink in and work it’s magic before your pup decides to lick it off (and sweet almond oil is safe to consume, so no worries if they do). It’s also a good idea to apply the oil before bedtime so that it can sink in overnight when your dog’s body goes into restore mode. It can even be applied to cracked pads to help soothe and repair them. It’s great for dry and itchy skin; just massage it into your dog’s coat and let its soothing qualities do their job. Sweet almond oil also has anti-inflammatory properties and can be a light sun protectant. Just be sure to check that your dog doesn’t have any allergies to nuts before you apply anything with sweet almond oil in it!
